The Vatican is abuzz with speculation as Pope Francis battles a severe respiratory infection that has left him hospitalized with pneumonia. Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi has hinted that the 88-year-old pontiff may consider stepping down if his health deteriorates further.
Admitted last week due to severe breathing difficulties following a bout of bronchitis, Pope Francis has remained resilient, continuing his duties from his hospital room. However, Ravasi underscored that the Pope's commitment to direct communication with the public could influence his decision, should his condition prevent him from fulfilling his papal responsibilities.
Francis, who has openly acknowledged the possibility of resignation in the past, reportedly has a pre-signed resignation letter in place. While sources indicate his condition has shown slight improvement, the Vatican remains on edge, awaiting further developments.
If he steps down, Pope Francis would follow the precedent set by his predecessor, Benedict XVI, marking another historic shift in the papacy.
