Pi Network Open Mainnet: The Wait Is Over

By Mohammed Bello Doka

After six years of meticulous development and anticipation, Pi Network is finally opening its doors to the world. On February 20, 2025, at exactly 8:00 AM UTC, the network will transition to the Open Mainnet phase, marking a significant milestone in its journey to becoming a fully functional, decentralized cryptocurrency ecosystem.

This momentous step follows years of rigorous testing, community engagement, and system refinements. Pi Network, which boasts over 19 million identity-verified pioneers, has successfully migrated 10.14 million users to its Mainnet, surpassing its original goal of 10 million. With over 100 Mainnet-ready apps and a vibrant peer-to-peer ecosystem already in place, the stage is set for Pi to integrate with external systems, enabling seamless transactions beyond its enclosed network.

The transition will introduce external connectivity to Pi's layer-1 blockchain, allowing pioneers to interact with other compliant networks and businesses. A major highlight of this phase is the removal of the firewall that previously restricted external transactions. This means that pioneers can now engage in real-world transactions with businesses and individuals outside the Pi ecosystem.

To maintain security and compliance, participation in the Mainnet will require Know Your Customer (KYC) verification for users and Know Your Business (KYB) verification for enterprises. Verified businesses will be listed on the Pi Network website, ensuring a safe and regulated environment for transactions.

Pi Network's journey has been marked by strategic phases, including the launch of the Enclosed Network in December 2021 and the Grace Period in July 2024, which accelerated KYC and Mainnet migration efforts. Events like PiFest 2024, which saw nearly a million participants engaging in transactions using Pi, showcased the practical applications of the cryptocurrency in local commerce.

With the Open Mainnet launch, pioneers are encouraged to continue mining, engaging with Pi applications, and supporting the network’s growth. Developers are also urged to refine existing apps and create new ones that enhance the Pi ecosystem’s functionality and real-world use.

As the global cryptocurrency landscape continues to evolve, Pi Network’s Open Mainnet phase represents a crucial turning point, proving that a decentralized, peer-to-peer economy can thrive. For pioneers and developers alike, the wait is finally over—the future of Pi has arrived.
