In a decisive political victory, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has secured all chairmanship and councillorship positions across the 30 local government areas in Osun State. This outcome was officially announced by Hashim Abioye, Chairman of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC), during a press conference on Saturday.
The election, held on February 22, 2025, proceeded under a cloud of legal disputes. Just a day prior, an Osun State High Court in Ilesa mandated OSSIEC to conduct the local government elections as scheduled, recognizing vacancies in all 30 LGAs. Justice A.A. Aderibigbe's ruling emphasized the necessity of filling these positions through a democratic process.
However, the Federal Government, through Attorney-General Lateef Fagbemi, directed Governor Ademola Adeleke to suspend the elections. This directive was based on a Court of Appeal ruling that reinstated local government chairmen elected during former Governor Gboyega Oyetola's administration, suggesting their tenure remains valid until October 2025.
Hashim Abioye, who assumed the role of OSSIEC Chairman in January 2024, has faced scrutiny over his impartiality due to his previous affiliation with the PDP. In response, Abioye clarified that he resigned from the party upon his appointment and is dedicated to conducting fair elections.
The PDP's comprehensive victory in these elections is poised to significantly influence the political landscape of Osun State.
