The Director General of the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), Umar Ibrahim Mohammed, was among the distinguished guests at the official unveiling of the 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet). The high-profile event, held in Abuja, was presided over by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo SAN.
With the theme "The Role of Early Warnings Towards a Climate Resilient Aviation Industry for Sustainable Socio-Economic Development," the SCP serves as a crucial meteorological forecast, offering insights into expected weather patterns for the year. According to NiMet’s projections, certain southern states will experience early rainfall, while parts of the North and Central regions may witness delayed onset. The report also details variations in the end-of-rainy-season timelines across different regions.
Minister Keyamo emphasized the SCP’s significance as a strategic tool for planning in sectors such as agriculture, disaster management, health, marine operations, and aviation. He noted that early warnings provided by NiMet enable stakeholders to mitigate climate-related risks and optimize opportunities.
Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, reaffirmed NiMet’s commitment to inclusivity by ensuring that the SCP is accessible in multiple languages, including Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba, and Pidgin. Additionally, he highlighted the release of the State of the Climate in Nigeria 2024 report, providing a comprehensive review of climatic trends and anomalies.
NiMet’s Director General, Prof. Charles Anosike, called on stakeholders to actively engage with the SCP, utilize its insights for informed decision-making, and provide feedback to enhance its effectiveness. He also acknowledged the support of the National Assembly and various state governments in ensuring the widespread dissemination of climate information across the country.
