The Federal Government has dismissed rumors circulating on social media alleging that the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos is unsafe and shaking. It described the claims as baseless and a deliberate attempt to create panic among Nigerians.
The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Mrs. Olukorede Kesha, made this clarification on Thursday during an inspection tour of the bridge with journalists.
Addressing the media, Kesha stated that the viral messages, which originated from platforms such as WhatsApp and Facebook, alleging structural issues with the bridge, were entirely false. She attributed the rumors to mischief-makers attempting to stir unnecessary tension.
"The Honourable Minister has directed that I come out and tell Lagosians and Nigerians that there is nothing wrong with the bridge," Kesha affirmed. "The rumor is the handiwork of mischief columnists – those who are idle and think the political atmosphere is too quiet for them."
Kesha further explained that the inspection, which involved driving along the entire 11-kilometer stretch of the bridge, confirmed its structural integrity.
“We are using this opportunity to tell the motoring public, Lagosians, and all Nigerians that the bridge is safe. Its integrity is not in doubt,” she reassured.
She urged the public to disregard the false claims and continue using the bridge without fear, noting that government officials and Lagosians alike rely on the structure daily.
The Federal Government’s swift response underscores its commitment to dispelling misinformation and ensuring public safety.
