Vice President Kashim Shettima has lauded the contributions of former Defence Minister, Lieutenant-General Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma (rtd.), describing him as a symbol of patriotism and stability in Nigeria. Speaking at a celebratory event held in Abuja to mark Danjuma’s 87th birthday, Shettima highlighted the elder statesman’s pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s political, social, and military landscape.
In his tribute, Shettima referred to Danjuma as a “national hero whose commitment to Nigeria’s unity and progress remains exemplary.” He emphasized that Danjuma’s legacy as a military officer, philanthropist, and statesman transcends generations, adding that the nation owes him immense gratitude for his selfless service and contributions to nation-building.
“General TY Danjuma is not just a soldier; he is a bridge-builder, a peacemaker, and a defender of Nigeria’s sovereignty. His courage and foresight have been instrumental in preserving our unity, particularly during the most challenging moments in our nation’s history,” Shettima stated.
Danjuma’s career, spanning over five decades, is marked by his instrumental role during Nigeria’s civil war and his tenure as Chief of Army Staff. Beyond his military exploits, he has distinguished himself as a philanthropist through the TY Danjuma Foundation, which focuses on healthcare, education, and economic empowerment across underserved communities in Nigeria.
Shettima underscored Danjuma’s efforts to foster social cohesion and economic development through his foundation, describing it as “a testament to his enduring love for the Nigerian people.”
Highlighting the importance of learning from elder statesmen like Danjuma, Shettima called on Nigerians, especially the youth, to emulate his values of resilience, dedication, and service to the nation. “In an era where divisive rhetoric often overshadows national unity, leaders like General Danjuma remind us of the power of selfless leadership and unwavering commitment to the greater good,” he said.
The event was attended by prominent figures from across the country, including governors, senators, military officers, traditional rulers, and members of the business community. They all paid glowing tributes to Danjuma, describing him as a “living legend” whose contributions to Nigeria’s development are unmatched.
In his brief remarks, the celebrant expressed gratitude to the Vice President and other dignitaries present. He reiterated his commitment to Nigeria’s progress and called for unity in addressing the country’s challenges.
“Unity is the foundation upon which any nation can thrive. I urge all Nigerians to rise above our differences and work together for the prosperity of our great country,” Danjuma said.
As Nigeria navigates its contemporary challenges, the celebration of TY Danjuma’s legacy serves as a reminder of the enduring importance of selfless leadership and patriotism in nation-building.
