Edo Tribunal: PDP Accuses APC of Using EFCC to Intimidate Witnesses

Benin City, Edo State – The political tensions in Edo State have intensified as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) accuses the All Progressives Congress (APC) of employing the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to intimidate witnesses testifying before the gubernatorial election tribunal. Prince Christopher Odianarewo, National Secretary and Head of the Media Team for the PDP National Rebranding Forum, raised the alarm, describing the alleged actions as a "shame to our democratic values and a misuse of the EFCC's mandate."

Odianarewo alleged that the EFCC, an agency established to fight financial crimes, is being weaponized to further the APC's political agenda. "The harassment and intimidation of our witnesses are a flagrant abuse of democratic principles," he said, adding that these actions undermine the credibility of institutions meant to protect the rule of law.

The accusations come amidst the PDP's legal challenge to the declaration of Senator Monday Okpebholo of the APC as the winner of the Edo gubernatorial election. Odianarewo expressed optimism, saying, “Despite the unnecessary harassment, we are confident that victory will come through ASUE IGHODALO at the courts. God will make Himself known.”

The APC has not yet issued a formal response to the allegations. However, observers anticipate the party will deny the claims, emphasizing the legitimacy of their victory and the ongoing legal process.

If substantiated, these accusations could have significant implications for Nigeria's democratic process, raising questions about the impartiality of its institutions. The alleged use of state power to suppress opposition threatens the foundational values of democracy and the integrity of the electoral process.
