Edo APC Decries Violence at Tribunal Venue

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State has expressed outrage over a violent incident that occurred at the Edo Governorship Election Tribunal in Benin City. The party has accused supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of orchestrating the chaos that disrupted proceedings and threatened the safety of attendees.

The incident took place outside the tribunal venue on January 15, 2025, as tensions flared over the ongoing legal dispute challenging the legitimacy of the PDP’s victory in the 2024 gubernatorial election. Witnesses reported that an unidentified gunman fired several shots into the air, sending people running for cover.

In a strongly worded statement, the Edo APC Chairman, Col. David Imuse (rtd), condemned the act of violence, describing it as a desperate attempt by the PDP to intimidate the opposition and disrupt the tribunal’s proceedings. “This is a clear indication of the PDP’s disregard for the rule of law and their fear of justice being served,” Imuse stated.

The APC also called on security agencies to investigate the incident thoroughly and bring the culprits to justice. “We cannot allow violence to dictate the outcome of our democratic processes. Those responsible for this barbaric act must face the full weight of the law,” the statement added.

The PDP, however, has denied any involvement in the incident, labeling the APC’s allegations as baseless. A PDP spokesperson argued that the opposition party was merely seeking to distract from the evidence presented at the tribunal.

Meanwhile, the police have assured the public that investigations are underway. “We have launched a manhunt for the perpetrator and are working to ensure the safety of everyone attending the tribunal,” said a spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command.

This latest development underscores the volatile political atmosphere in Edo State, where election disputes have often been marred by accusations, counter-accusations, and sporadic acts of violence.

As the tribunal continues its work, all eyes remain on the judiciary to deliver a fair and impartial judgment that reflects the will of the people. However, stakeholders are urging all parties to maintain peace and allow the legal process to run its course without interference.
