The Nigerian Senate has taken a decisive step to suspend further discussions on the proposed tax bills, pending the outcome of a strategic meeting with the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF). The decision, announced by Deputy Senate President Senator Barau Jibrin during Wednesday's plenary session, highlights the lawmakers’ commitment to addressing contentious issues in the proposed legislation.
According to Senator Jibrin, a special committee has been constituted to analyze and address the controversial provisions in the tax bills. This committee, chaired by Senator Abba Moro, comprises notable members including Senators Tahir Monguno, Adamu Aliero, Orji Uzor Kalu, Seriake Dickson, Titus Zam, Yahaya Abdullahi, Solomon Adeola, Sani Musa, and Mukhail Abiru.
The pivotal meeting with the AGF is scheduled for Thursday, December 5, 2024, where key stakeholders aim to iron out differences and realign the bills with national interests. This development comes after heated debates among lawmakers over specific provisions of the proposed legislation, which have stirred significant concerns from various quarters.
In addition to the planned meeting, Senate leadership announced an upcoming special session, to be chaired by the Minority Leader, at the National Assembly. The purpose of this session is to harmonize lawmakers’ positions and address lingering concerns from stakeholders, ensuring a balanced and inclusive approach to the tax reforms.
