In a bold move to redefine the future of education in Nigeria, the Federal Government has announced the introduction of 15 skill acquisition courses into the curriculum for Primary and Junior Secondary schools. This initiative, set to commence in the 2025 academic year, aims to equip students with practical skills that will enhance their employability and self-reliance upon graduation.
Under this program, students will select one skill from an array of 15 options, acquiring both theoretical and practical knowledge throughout their nine years of basic education, from Primary 1 to Junior Secondary School 3.
The skill courses include Plumbing, Tiling and Floor Works, POP Installation, Event Decoration and Management, Bakery and Confectioneries, Hairstyling, Makeup, Interior Design, GSM Repairs, Satellite/TV Antenna Installation, CCTV and Intercom Installation and Maintenance, Solar Installation and Maintenance, Garment Making, Agriculture and Processing (covering beekeeping, poultry, and horticulture), and Basic Digital Literacy, including IT and Robotics.
To ensure the successful implementation of this curriculum, the Federal Government has pledged to train, retrain, and employ teachers across public and private schools nationwide. This forward-thinking approach is designed to foster a generation of skilled individuals capable of contributing to Nigeria’s economic development.
Speaking on the initiative, a representative of the Ministry of Education emphasized, “This is a transformative step toward bridging the gap between education and industry demands. Our aim is to prepare students not just for academic success but for real-world challenges.”
The introduction of these skill courses reflects the government's commitment to nurturing a self-reliant and productive workforce, setting a new benchmark for basic education in Nigeria.
