President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has made strategic appointments within the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), introducing new leadership to support the Commission’s mission for fair and credible elections. Abdulrazak Yusuf Tukur has been appointed as National Commissioner representing the North-West, while Saseyi Feyijimi Ibiyemi has been nominated as the new Resident Electoral Commissioner for Ogun State, filling a critical role left by the passing of ‘Niyi Ijalaye in August.
The announcement came via Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, who highlighted the extensive experience each nominee brings to the table. Tukur, 59, began his career with INEC in 1999 and has steadily advanced through the ranks, most recently serving as Director of Electoral Operations and Logistics. An alumnus of Bayero University with further postgraduate studies in economics at Bradford University and a Master’s from Leeds University in England, Tukur’s academic and professional background are expected to reinforce INEC's operational capabilities in the North-West. His appointment, however, remains subject to Senate confirmation.
Similarly, if confirmed, Ibiyemi will bring her vast legal and administrative experience to Ogun State’s electoral processes. Hailing from Ilaje in Ondo State, Ibiyemi graduated from Obafemi Awolowo University in 1987 and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1988. She currently serves as the Administrative Secretary of INEC in Lagos State. Her nomination is intended to strengthen INEC’s administrative functions and uphold the integrity of electoral processes within Ogun State.
These appointments underscore Tinubu’s commitment to bolstering Nigeria's democratic institutions by selecting seasoned professionals to guide INEC in critical areas.
