Bishop Matthew Kukah, the Catholic Archbishop of Sokoto Diocese, has described Nigeria’s recent leaders, including President Bola Tinubu and former President Muhammadu Buhari, as part of an "accidental leadership" cycle. According to Kukah, these leaders took office without adequate preparation, lacking the skills necessary to navigate Nigeria’s challenges effectively.
Speaking at the official commissioning of Start-Rite School’s new building in Abuja, Kukah emphasized that Nigeria’s political culture prioritizes personalities over competence, contributing to governance failures. He highlighted that Tinubu’s administration, like those before it, inherited a legacy of unresolved issues, raising concerns about the new government's ability to break the cycle.
Kukah called for a shift towards a merit-based political system and better leadership training, urging Nigerian citizens to be more engaged in holding leaders accountable. He stressed that without a change in how leaders are chosen, Nigeria’s governance challenges would persist. His remarks have sparked debate, with some agreeing that Nigeria’s leadership has been ill-prepared, while others argue that the nation’s complex landscape poses unique difficulties.
