The Director General of the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), Umar Ibrahim Mohammed, recently hosted a delegation from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Government of Pakistan. This high-profile visit, led by Hameed Ullah Malik, Director of the Disaster Management Authority in Punjab, Pakistan, and Adelai de Umuluzu, Water Management Advisor at the IOM, was aimed at addressing Nigeria's ongoing and future flood risks, with a particular focus on recent assessments in Maiduguri and Adamawa.
During the meeting, the delegation shared a comprehensive action plan and a disaster risk management model, drawing upon their extensive expertise in handling flood-related challenges. These strategies, based on recent evaluations of the 2024 flood threats, included key recommendations to bolster Nigeria's flood resilience.
Director General Umar Ibrahim Mohammed expressed his gratitude, acknowledging the critical insights provided by the visiting experts. He underscored the importance of forging partnerships with international agencies and local stakeholders, emphasizing how such collaborations could significantly enhance Nigeria's flood management capabilities. Mohammed also pointed out the potential to engage donor agencies in supporting these crucial initiatives.
As part of these collective efforts, the delegation extended an invitation to NIHSA to participate in a forthcoming stakeholders' meeting. Scheduled for November 20, 2024, the session will focus on developing joint strategies and securing resources to mitigate the impact of flooding.
