Abuja – In a solemn ceremony at the National Military Cemetery, President Bola Tinubu on Friday led the nation in bidding farewell to the late Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja. Attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, top government officials, senior military officers, and members of the diplomatic community, the funeral was marked by full military honours, including a 19-gun salute to the late general.
President Tinubu, joined by Vice President Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, and other top officials, laid wreaths in tribute to the late military leader. In a heartfelt address, the President praised Lagbaja as a "soldier's soldier," noting his dedication and professionalism throughout his career.
“He was a trusted advisor, a man of prudent action who cared more for his nation than himself,” Tinubu remarked, adding that the nation has lost an irreplaceable leader. In honour of Lagbaja’s legacy, the President posthumously awarded him the Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR), presented to his widow, Mariya.
Tinubu extended condolences to Lagbaja's family, acknowledging their sacrifices in sharing their loved one with the nation. “His sacrifices will never be forgotten, and his life’s work will continue to inspire all who serve in our armed forces,” he said.
The President urged members of the Armed Forces to carry forward Lagbaja's values of patriotism and dedication, emphasizing his role in Nigeria's fight against terrorism, insurgency, and banditry. Known for his hands-on leadership, Lagbaja was deeply committed to the welfare of his soldiers, particularly advocating for financial support to families of deceased personnel.
Lt. General Lagbaja, who passed away on November 5, 2024, served as Chief of Army Staff since June 2023 and was a distinguished officer with a career spanning from his enrollment in the Nigerian Defence Academy in 1987. His legacy, the President declared, will forever reside “in the pantheon of military greats.”
