Ahead of the Ondo State gubernatorial election, Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) Sylvester Abiodun Alabi, fdc, responsible for election security, addressed officers and the media today, November 14, 2024, at the Ondo State Police Command Headquarters in Akure. DIG Alabi emphasized the readiness of the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies, detailing the robust security measures in place to ensure smooth and safe elections.
In his address, DIG Alabi confirmed that police personnel are strategically deployed across all 18 Local Government Areas, 203 Wards, and 3,933 Polling Units statewide. Each polling unit will be manned by at least four officers, in conjunction with other security agencies, to provide comprehensive coverage for voter safety and process integrity.
Highlighting the importance of intelligence gathering and firmness, DIG Alabi noted these strategies are essential for early threat detection and the prevention of electoral malpractice, such as vote-buying and fraud. "Our approach is both proactive and firm to uphold security and fairness throughout the process," he stated.
The DIG encouraged a collaborative approach among security agencies and the public, reassuring citizens of the police’s commitment to maintain law and order before, during, and after the polls. He urged the electorate to comply with the Electoral Act, 2023 (as amended), and INEC guidelines, warning that any electoral offenders would face arrest and prosecution.
With the Nigeria Police Force prioritizing public safety, DIG Alabi expressed confidence in a secure election and called on citizens to engage peacefully to uphold the democratic process.
