The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has issued a stern warning against corruption within the Nigeria Police Force, promising stringent measures against officers involved in misconduct. This follows allegations of extortion against officers from the Zone 16 Zonal Headquarters in Yenagoa. These officers—ASP Emmanuel Ubong, Inspector Nse Okon, Inspector Adiewere Collins, and Inspector Kuromare Marine—reportedly extorted Ten Million Naira from a group of young Nigerians. The sum has since been recovered due to swift action by the newly appointed Assistant Inspector-General of Police for Zone 16, and the officers are currently facing an orderly room trial.
In a strong statement, IGP Egbetokun reiterated the Force’s zero-tolerance policy for corruption and abuse of power, emphasizing that the Nigeria Police Force is committed to accountability and transparency. He assured the public that all allegations of misconduct are treated with the utmost seriousness, adding that any officer, regardless of rank, found guilty of corruption will face severe consequences as a means to uphold the integrity of the Force.

Furthermore, IGP Egbetokun has scheduled a workshop on child protection and investigative practices for Monday, November 11, 2024, aimed at improving the handling of cases involving vulnerable individuals, particularly children. This workshop, which will involve heads of police investigative units, seeks to foster a compassionate and ethical approach in the Force’s treatment of young and vulnerable individuals. By focusing on child-friendly protocols and modern investigative techniques, the initiative strives to build a culture of professionalism and accountability within the Nigeria Police, reinforcing public trust in law enforcement.
