In a strong show of support for legislative initiatives and local development, Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has announced his commitment to presenting the state's 2025 budget to the Rivers State House of Assembly, currently led by Speaker Victor Oko-Jumbo.
Speaking at the inauguration of two newly constructed town halls and the launch of a scholarship and empowerment initiative for tertiary students in the Akiama and Aganya communities within Bonny Local Government Area, Governor Fubara commended the Speaker’s active role in uplifting his constituency. “The government and the people of Rivers State heartily congratulate you and thank you for being a good ambassador of the Ibani Kingdom. We assure you that, as the executive arm, while the legislative arm remains independent, we will continue to collaborate to ensure prosperity for our people,” Fubara stated, acknowledging the Speaker’s dedication.
The governor expressed particular gratitude for the Assembly’s ongoing cooperation with the executive branch, highlighting the Speaker’s role in key legislative duties, such as overseeing the screening of caretaker committee chairmen and fast-tracking executive proposals. Fubara remarked, “I thank you, Mr Speaker, for your support to the Rivers State government, as seen in your cooperation. The Speaker has facilitated the screening of caretaker committee chairmen, expedited executive requests, and will soon play a vital role in enacting the 2025 budget."
Turning his attention to constituency projects, Fubara praised them as a reflection of commitment from elected officials to their communities. He noted, with some sharp criticism, the absence of similar efforts from past Assembly members now residing in Abuja. “Constituency projects are a testament to elected representatives’ commitment to their people. Meanwhile, the 25 former Assembly members who dismissed themselves — have they initiated any projects? Do we see them inspecting or commissioning anything? These are Abuja-based politicians!” he said, calling for a renewed focus on local accountability.
This engagement underscores the Fubara administration’s intent to maintain an active partnership with the legislative arm, fostering developmental strides across Rivers State.
