In a bid to enhance Nigeria's resilience against climate challenges, the Director General of the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), Umar Ibrahim Mohammed, recently welcomed a high-profile delegation from the Presidency. This delegation included Olamide Fagbuji, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Climate Technology and Operations, and Ibrahim A. Shelley, Senior Special Assistant on Climate Finance and Stakeholder Engagement.
The courtesy visit aimed to discuss collaboration pathways between NIHSA and the Presidency to address urgent hydrological and climate challenges. Key topics on the agenda included the need for adequate funding, improving real-time climate data on flooding and drought, and boosting public awareness on the repercussions of climate-related disasters. With a shared focus on enhancing NIHSA’s advocacy efforts, the discussions highlighted the urgent need for sustainable water management and improved climate resilience nationwide.
Director General Umar Ibrahim Mohammed expressed appreciation for the initiative, noting the importance of innovative solutions and cross-sectoral partnerships in fortifying Nigeria’s hydrological response. He stressed that such collaboration is pivotal for effectively managing water resources, particularly as climate change intensifies the risks of flooding and drought in the country. Awa Mercy, NIHSA’s Head of the Climate Change Unit, was also present, reflecting NIHSA’s dedication to coordinating climate-related efforts.
As the meeting concluded, both parties pledged to maintain open lines of communication and explore further opportunities for mutual support. This collaboration marks a significant step toward building a more climate-resilient Nigeria, promising improved resources, data, and public engagement for a secure hydrological future.
