The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has issued an official statement addressing a viral video that shows the Nigerian currency, the Naira, being sprayed at a wedding ceremony in Kano on October 24, 2024. The event sparked public outcry, with many accusing Mrs. Fauziya Danjuma Goje, daughter of Senator Danjuma Goje, of currency abuse. This sentiment was amplified by commentary from a prominent national newspaper.
Upon thorough investigation, the EFCC confirmed that while the alleged Naira abuse did take place, it was not during the wedding of Senator Goje's daughter. Instead, the incident occurred at the wedding dinner of Amina Babagana Zannah, daughter of Hajara Seidu Haruna—known as Hafsat Gold Nigeria—CEO of Hafsat Jewellery Enterprise. The wedding, held on the same date in Kano, featured attendees from the groom’s family in Niger Republic, who were identified as those seen in the video spraying Naira and dollar bills.
The bridegroom, Ibrahim Mohammad, a Nigerien national, has since been invited by the EFCC to its headquarters in Abuja, along with all individuals involved in the currency-spraying incident.
The EFCC commended the public for their vigilance and assured Nigerians of its commitment to curbing currency abuse. However, the Commission stressed that it would only take action against confirmed offenders, reiterating its stance to pursue justice fairly and without prejudice.
