The Director General of the Committee of Youth on Mobilization and Sensitization (CYMS), Chief Obinna Nwaka, has called for a concerted effort in promoting good governance and sustainable youth empowerment to address the growing issue of irregular migration among Nigerian youth.
Speaking at the 2024 Youth Migration Forum organized by the May Global Empowerment Initiative, Chief Nwaka delivered a paper titled "The Role of Youth in National Development" on Saturday in Abuja. The event, which focused on the pivotal role of young people in shaping the future of Nigeria, brought together youth leaders, policymakers, and key government representatives, including the Honourable Minister of Youth Development, Mr. Uche Theoda, and the Deputy Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Joy Akut.
In his speech, Nwaka emphasized that youth empowerment, alongside strong governance structures, is crucial in addressing the root causes of irregular migration. He highlighted that many Nigerian youths are compelled to seek opportunities abroad due to limited access to sustainable employment and development opportunities at home. He underscored that, for Nigeria to thrive, the active participation of its youth in national development must be prioritized.
"Good governance is essential in creating an environment where youth can thrive and contribute meaningfully to the nation’s progress. No nation can prosper without harnessing the energy and potential of its youth," Nwaka stated.
He commended the efforts of the event's convener, Ms. Mary Osato Igbinosun, for organizing the forum, which aimed to spark dialogue on innovative solutions for reducing the rate of irregular migration. The forum also featured discussions on the role of youth in policy-making and national development.
The CYMS Director General was accompanied to the event by his Special Assistant, Amb Nuhu Akurugba, and Protocol Officer Ms. Ruth Eluu.
The Youth Migration Forum provided a platform for stakeholders to explore strategies that could help curb irregular migration while ensuring that Nigerian youth have access to the tools, resources, and opportunities they need to thrive domestically.
