Located in the historic city of Zaria, Kaduna State, Nigeria, the Federal College of Education — also known as the Federal University of Education, Zaria — is an institution renowned for its dedication to advancing the future of education. However, behind its respected reputation, both students and lecturers face a host of challenges that undermine academic excellence.
For students, the journey is marred by inadequate infrastructure. Aging buildings, outdated libraries, and limited ICT facilities hamper effective learning. "We often have to rely on our personal devices for research," lamented Aisha, a final-year student. "The college's internet connectivity is unreliable."
Lecturers confront their own set of issues, including low salaries, delayed payments, and limited professional development opportunities. "It's difficult to inspire students when we're struggling to make ends meet," shared Dr. Yusuf, a long-serving lecturer.
An outdated curriculum adds to the problem. "Our courses are no longer relevant to the modern job market," noted Dr. Fatima, a lecturer in the Department of Education. "We need to integrate technology and entrepreneurship into our programs."
Inadequate funding further compounds these challenges. "We lack basic teaching materials, even markers and chalk," said Dr. Mohammed from the Department of Science Education. "How can we expect students to excel in such conditions?"
Student welfare is also a pressing concern. Inadequate accommodation, poor sanitation, and limited extracurricular activities affect students' mental and physical well-being. "We're forced to live off-campus, exposing us to safety risks," explained Emmanuel, a second-year student.
Despite these challenges, both students and lecturers remain resilient. "We're determined to succeed, despite the odds," affirmed Aisha. Dr. Yusuf added, "We're not just educators; we're mentors, guiding our students toward a brighter future."
The Federal University of Education, Zaria, has the potential to reclaim its former glory. With government support, private investment, and stakeholder collaboration, the institution could:
Upgrade its infrastructure and facilities
Improve lecturer training and welfare
Update its curriculum to align with modern needs
Increase funding for teaching materials and student welfare
Foster partnerships with industry and academia
Until these changes occur, students and lecturers will continue to face these formidable challenges. Nevertheless, their resilience and dedication provide hope for a better future.
