At the heart of Cape Town, South Africa, experts in the field of hydrology have convened for the Global Conference on Data Sharing, Harmonization, and Interoperability. The event, which drew global participants, is sponsored by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and hosted by the South African Weather Services. A central theme of the conference is the critical need for enhanced hydrological data sharing to support climate adaptation and water management.
Among the attendees is Pastor Femi Bejide, the Director of Operational Hydrology at Nigeria’s Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), who is representing Nigeria. Bejide, alongside his peers, aims to contribute Nigeria's insights and expertise on hydrological practices, particularly as the nation faces growing challenges linked to climate change and flooding.
The conference features discussions on WMO’s global programs, including HYDROSERVE, HYDROSOS, WHOS, WIGOS, and HYDROHUB, all geared towards improving the sharing of hydrological data worldwide. These initiatives are set to enhance the interoperability of data systems and ensure a smoother exchange of vital information between nations.
Participants of the workshop are hopeful that the conference will pave the way for more robust data frameworks, fostering greater collaboration in understanding and managing global water resources. The gathering marks a significant step towards the collective effort to tackle the complexities of hydrology in a changing climate.
