In a stern warning, former Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, has cautioned the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu about the looming threat of a popular revolt due to escalating economic hardships. Speaking at a national dialogue hosted by the Parliamentary System Support Group in the House of Representatives, Aregbesola expressed deep concern over the widening gap between Nigeria's wealthy elite and its struggling masses. He emphasized that immediate action is crucial to prevent a situation that could threaten the stability of the current administration.
Reflecting on Nigeria's socio-economic landscape, Aregbesola pointed to a disturbing concentration of wealth in the hands of a privileged few. "During my youth, prosperity was more widely shared among Nigerians," he remarked. "Today, it is confined to a small minority, signaling serious trouble for our nation." The former governor stressed that the economic challenges facing the country could no longer be ignored, urging the government to bridge the divide before frustrations boil over into outright defiance.
Aregbesola underscored the "worsening economic, political, and spiritual conditions" that plague the country, warning that any system that fails to provide equitable opportunities risks facing backlash. "When the rights and needs of the people are continuously denied, history shows that a revolt becomes inevitable," he added.
With inflation skyrocketing and the cost of living soaring, Aregbesola’s appeal is clear: the Tinubu administration must take bold and strategic steps to ease the economic strain on everyday Nigerians. His words stand as both a critique and a call for reflection, urging those in power to acknowledge the depth of the nation’s problems and initiate meaningful reforms. Without decisive action, he warned, the consequences could be severe, threatening not only the government’s credibility but also Nigeria’s social stability.
