Tinubu Appoints Major General Oluyede as Acting Chief of Army Staff

In a recent appointment to reinforce leadership within the Nigerian Armed Forces, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has named Major General Olufemi Olatubosun Oluyede as the acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS). This decision comes as Lt. General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, the current Chief of Army Staff, remains temporarily unavailable due to health concerns.

Major General Oluyede, a seasoned officer and experienced leader, steps into this crucial role, bringing with him a wealth of operational and command experience. Prior to this appointment, he served as the 56th Commander of the Infantry Corps, an elite branch of the Nigerian Army headquartered in Jaji, Kaduna State. His career trajectory underscores his longstanding commitment to the Nigerian military, having initially been commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1992, effective from 1987, and achieving the rank of Major General in 2020.

Throughout his distinguished career, Oluyede has held a variety of key positions, including Platoon Commander and Adjutant of the 65 Battalion, Company Commander of the 177 Guards Battalion, Staff Officer at the Guards Brigade, and Commandant at the Amphibious Training School. His expertise in both strategic planning and field command has positioned him as a leader who understands the complexities of modern military operations.

Oluyede’s operational experience spans across national and regional assignments. He has notably participated in the Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) Mission in Liberia, Operation HARMONY IV in Bakassi, and Operation HADIN KAI in Nigeria's Northeast, where he commanded the 27 Task Force Brigade. His dedication and service have earned him numerous honors, such as the Corps Medal of Honour, the Grand Service Star, and the prestigious Chief of Army Staff Commendation Award.

As a well-respected military leader, Oluyede’s expertise is anticipated to guide the Nigerian Army effectively in his acting role. His appointment highlights President Tinubu’s commitment to ensuring continuous and stable military leadership.
