The Honourable Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, has condemned the actions of Libyan authorities who recently held the Nigerian Super Eagles and their officials hostage at Al Abaq Airport. The incident unfolded when the Nigerian aircraft, originally bound for Benghazi, was unexpectedly diverted to a different city over two hours away from the intended destination, just an hour before landing.
The diversion left the Super Eagles team, officials, and support staff stranded, facing unnecessary delays and distress. Senator Enoh expressed deep concern over the treatment of the team, noting that they were in Libya for an international engagement, and described the actions of the Libyan authorities as "deeply disturbing and completely unacceptable."
"Holding our national team and officials hostage under any circumstances violates international sporting protocols and the principles of respect and hospitality expected from a host nation. The Nigerian government will not tolerate any form of disrespect or mistreatment towards our players and officials," stated Senator Enoh.
The Minister reassured Nigerians that the safety and welfare of the Super Eagles remained the government's top priority. He indicated that the Ministry of Sports Development was actively working with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other diplomatic channels to secure the team's immediate release and ensure their safe passage to their intended destination.
"We are in close contact with the appropriate authorities, and we are sparing no effort in resolving this matter swiftly. I urge everyone to remain calm while we engage diplomatically," Senator Enoh added.
Senator Enoh called on Libyan authorities to respect international sporting relations and uphold the fundamental rights of athletes and officials traveling for official purposes. He emphasized that sports diplomacy is a vital tool for fostering global unity, and such incidents should not be allowed to disrupt these relations.
While assuring the Nigerian public that all necessary measures were being taken, the Minister also expressed gratitude for the patience and support shown during this challenging time, reiterating that the Super Eagles would be brought to safety as soon as possible.
