Vice President Kashim Shettima's journey to represent Nigeria at the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Summit (CHOGM) in Samoa has been abruptly canceled following an incident at JFK Airport in New York. The Vice President’s plane was grounded after a foreign object damaged the cockpit windscreen during a stopover, rendering it unfit for the flight.
In response, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu promptly approved a ministerial delegation to ensure Nigeria's presence at the summit. The delegation, led by the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abass Lawal, will represent the country in the Samoa capital of Apia, where the summit commenced on October 21 and is scheduled to conclude on October 26.
Vice President Shettima, along with Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar, has already departed New York to return to Nigeria, as repair work on the damaged plane gets underway. The government’s swift adjustment ensures that Nigeria's commitment to the Commonwealth remains steadfast, despite the unexpected setback.
