The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has refuted claims circulating about the appointment of an acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS), emphasizing that Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja remains the substantive COAS. Brig.-Gen. Tukur Gusau, Acting Director of Defence Information, made the clarification on Monday in Abuja, categorically stating that no acting COAS position exists within the Nigerian Armed Forces.
According to Gusau, Lt.-Gen. Lagbaja is currently taking a well-deserved break as part of his 2024 annual leave. The statement dispelled any misconceptions about his health or status, reassuring that the army chief is hale and hearty, with plans to resume his duties shortly after his leave.
Gusau explained that during the COAS's absence, Maj.-Gen. Abdulsalam Ibrahim, Chief of Policy and Plans, is handling routine updates in line with military protocol. He affirmed the professional management of the armed forces, noting that all Service Chiefs continue to execute their roles as defined by the Nigerian Constitution.
The Defence Headquarters urged individuals spreading rumors to desist and advised media outlets to verify information with authorized sources before disseminating news to the public. Brig.-Gen. Gusau reiterated that Gen. Lagbaja recently communicated with the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, reinforcing that the COAS remains in sound health.
This clarification aims to prevent the spread of misinformation and reassure Nigerians of the stability and professional conduct within the Armed Forces.
