The Nigerian Armed Forces have recorded significant achievements in the ongoing fight against terrorism and other criminal activities, eliminating 101 terrorists and arresting a notorious commander, Usman Maisaje, along with 182 others in various military operations across the country over the past week.
The Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba, disclosed these developments in a statement released on Friday in Abuja. He highlighted that the troops had also successfully rescued 157 kidnapped individuals during the operations. Maisaje, who is a close associate of the notorious terrorist leader Kachalla Boka, is reportedly cooperating with military intelligence, providing valuable information that is expected to aid future counter-terrorism efforts.
The military’s operations yielded the recovery of 71 assorted weapons and over 1,400 rounds of ammunition, which included AK-47 rifles, fabricated firearms, pump-action guns, and specialized ammunition. Additionally, troops seized several vehicles, motorcycles, communication devices, and other items linked to terrorist activities.
In the North East, the operations conducted under the banner of Operation Hadin Kai resulted in the elimination of 54 terrorists and the arrest of 71 suspects. The military also facilitated the surrender of 74 individuals associated with the terrorist group, including women and children. Meanwhile, airstrikes targeted terrorist enclaves in Bukar Meram, leading to the destruction of structures and logistical supplies.
The North Central region witnessed the elimination of 12 extremists and the rescue of 56 hostages during joint operations by troops of Operations Safe Haven and Whirl Stroke. Similarly, in the North West, the military neutralized 28 terrorists and carried out airstrikes on known hideouts, effectively diminishing the capabilities of notorious terrorist kingpin Malam Yaddi in the Birnin Gwari area of Kaduna State.
Efforts in the Niger Delta focused on combating illegal oil activities, leading to the discovery and destruction of 60 illicit refining sites. The troops recovered large quantities of stolen crude oil, illegally refined diesel, and arrested 45 individuals involved in oil theft.
In the South East, the military, under Operation UDO KA, neutralized seven terrorists, arrested 12 extremists, and rescued 18 hostages.
Major General Buba reiterated the military's commitment to eradicating terrorism, stating, "We will not relent in our efforts to eliminate terrorists and dismantle the infrastructure that supports them. Our operations will continue to degrade their military capabilities and effectiveness."
