Good News: River Niger Flow Under Control as Flood Risk Eases

In a significant development, the Director General of the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), Umar Ibrahim Mohammed, has assured Nigerians that the flow of the River Niger is now under control, following a careful assessment of water levels. Addressing the public in a statement signed on Monday, October 7th, 2024, he emphasized the importance of continued adherence to flood preparedness protocols while reaffirming the agency's dedication to flood management across the country.

Umar Ibrahim Mohammed revealed that since the beginning of October, the water level in the River Niger Basin has steadily receded, easing the pressure on surrounding communities. He also provided an update on the status of Nigeria’s key dams, explaining that Jebba Dam is currently releasing excess water under the careful regulation of Kainji Dam operators. The latter had maintained a 53cm buffer until now, ensuring adequate room for any potential changes in water inflow.

"NIHSA, through its Director of Operational Hydrology, Pastor Femi Bejide, is working closely with the operators of both Kainji and Jebba Dams to effectively manage the reservoirs and prevent overflow incidents," the statement read. 

While the rainy season is gradually moving southward, Umar noted that water is still flowing into Nigeria from upstream, as observed by the agency’s monitoring stations at Jidere Bode and Kende. Nonetheless, NIHSA’s proactive measures have significantly reduced the risk of flooding.

Reaffirming the agency's collaborative efforts with national and international dam authorities, Umar highlighted that NIHSA remains committed to minimizing the impact of river flooding and promoting socio-economic stability across Nigeria.

This positive update is a testament to the effective management of Nigeria’s water resources, signaling good news for communities along the River Niger as the flood threat diminishes.
