In a decisive move to curb illegal arms trafficking, troops of Operation Safe Haven, in coordination with the 3 Division Nigerian Army, arrested five notorious gunrunners during an intelligence-led operation in Plateau State. The operation, which commenced at midnight on September 16 and continued into the early hours of September 17, resulted in the capture of key suspects and the recovery of a significant cache of arms and ammunition.
The raid took place at Naraguta Mining Area in Bayameni along Bauchi Road, Jos North Local Government Area, where a known gunrunner, Mohammed Sani, was apprehended alongside four accomplices. The following items were recovered from the scene:
- Two AK-47 rifles
- One Fabrique Nationale automatic rifle
- Fourteen AK-47 magazines
- One Fabrique Nationale magazine
- 5,316 rounds of 7.62 mm (Special)
- 98 rounds of 7.62 mm (NATO)
- 43 rounds of 9 mm ammunition
The suspects are currently undergoing interrogation to provide intelligence that could lead to further arrests and dismantling of the gunrunning syndicate. This operation underscores the commitment of the Nigerian military to mop up illegal arms and restore peace in the region.
