The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has raised an alarm over the severe effects of the ongoing torrential rainfall currently sweeping across the country. The intensity and prolonged duration of the rains have overwhelmed the capacity of many drainage systems, leading to flash floods, particularly in parts of Northern Nigeria. These floods have caused significant disruptions to communities, infrastructure, and farmlands, sparking concerns about the potential for larger-scale flooding if preventive measures are not effectively implemented.
NIHSA has reaffirmed its commitment to closely monitoring the situation, especially the rising water levels along the River Benue, a major concern due to its historical tendency to flood during periods of heavy rainfall. The Agency attributes the rise in water levels to two primary factors: the excessive rainfall that has continued to pound the region, and intermittent water releases from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon. Though the releases from Lagdo have been minimal so far, they still contribute to the pressure on the river system, and further releases could exacerbate the situation.
NIHSA, in a statement, emphasized that the Agency is doing everything within its capacity to ensure that large-scale river flooding is averted. “We are tracking real-time data on rainfall patterns and river levels, working in collaboration with other relevant agencies to issue timely warnings and provide mitigation strategies,” the statement explained. The Agency has also urged state and local governments, particularly in flood-prone areas, to take proactive steps in clearing blocked drains and relocating vulnerable communities to safer grounds.
Local reports from some northern states indicate that several roads and bridges have been washed away, and many residents have been displaced. Farmers, especially those along riverbanks, have expressed fears over the destruction of their crops, which could lead to severe food shortages in the coming months if the situation worsens. NIHSA has advised citizens living in low-lying areas and near rivers to remain alert and follow evacuation orders if necessary.
Beyond monitoring, NIHSA is collaborating with international partners to strengthen Nigeria’s flood management systems. The Agency has called on the federal government and private sector to provide additional resources for flood prevention and relief efforts.
As the rains are expected to continue through the coming weeks, the Agency stressed the need for heightened public awareness on the dangers of flooding and the importance of adhering to safety guidelines. NIHSA's efforts to curb the impact of the torrential downpours remain ongoing, but it will require collective action from all stakeholders, including state authorities and community leaders, to prevent a large-scale disaster.
With Northern Nigeria already grappling with economic challenges and a large population of internally displaced persons (IDPs) due to insecurity, the added pressure of flooding could further complicate efforts to stabilize the region. The next few weeks will be crucial as NIHSA intensifies its monitoring and continues to assess the risk of further flood incidents.
