The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has raised the alarm over steadily increasing water levels in critical stations along the River Benue basin. In a report dated Saturday, 20th September 2024, the agency highlighted a noticeable rise in water levels, approaching the threshold for potential flooding.
NIHSA emphasized the urgent need for containment measures or plans to allow the safe conveyance of excess water to be implemented, particularly in states previously warned about potential flood risks.
This advisory follows previous warnings issued by the agency, calling on governments and communities in affected regions to prepare for possible flooding, ensuring the safety of lives and property. The rising water levels indicate a clear threat, and proactive efforts are needed to mitigate any adverse impact that may follow.
