In the wake of Team Nigeria's disappointing performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where no medals were secured, the Honourable Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, has announced a forthcoming review of the constitutions governing Nigeria's sporting federations. This initiative aims to ensure more effective leadership and prevent future underperformance.
Senator Enoh, addressing concerns from Paris, expressed dissatisfaction with the outcome despite extensive preparations and financial support provided to the athletes. “We did everything as a Ministry to prepare the athletes adequately and provide them with every financial support, but unfortunately, the performance has not produced any podium finish,” he remarked.
Highlighting the need for systemic change, Senator Enoh stated, “As we go back home, we must do everything to prevent future occurrences of the Paris disaster, and if this involves reviewing the election processes for our sporting federations, it will be done.” He emphasized that the upcoming federations’ elections will serve as a crucial platform to appoint leaders who are genuinely capable.
Reflecting on the complexities of these elections, he added, “I am aware that the Sports Federations Elections in Nigeria are even tougher than our National Elections, and one must question why this is so.”
Senator Enoh concluded by stressing the importance of having qualified individuals lead the federations and acknowledging the need for constitutional reforms in some areas for better inclusivity.
This reform initiative aims to enhance the governance of Nigeria's sports federations and improve the country's performance on the global stage.
