In a shocking and tragic development, the Emir of Gobir has been kidnapped and brutally murdered after the kidnappers’ demand for a N1 billion ransom in cash went unmet. The Emir’s abduction sent shockwaves across the community, and the kidnappers initially demanded an exorbitant sum, setting a grim tone for what would follow if their demands were not fulfilled.
When the ransom was not paid, the kidnappers mercilessly executed the Emir. Adding to the horror, they then demanded N60 million and six motorbikes in exchange for the return of his body. This outrageous demand left the Emir’s family, particularly his son, in a state of deep distress and agony, as they struggled to deal with both the loss of their loved one and the cruel demands of the kidnappers.
What makes this case even more appalling is the continued failure of our security apparatus to prevent such crimes or to swiftly respond to them. Nigeria boasts a wide array of security and intelligence agencies, including the State Security Service (SSS), Department of State Services (DSS), Federal Investigation Bureau (FIB), Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), as well as the Army, Navy, Air Force, and other paramilitary forces. Yet, despite this impressive roster, the kidnappers were able to negotiate over the phone with the Emir's family without fear of interception or apprehension.
This raises serious questions about the effectiveness of our ministers and the various communication and telecommunications bodies that should, theoretically, have the capability to track these criminals. The Minister of Communication, the Minister of Telecommunications, and the Minister of Information, all with access to service providers, have thus far failed to leverage their resources to curb such heinous acts. The much-lauded Minister Bosun Tijani, often hailed as a "computer guru," appears ineffective if we cannot trace calls and pinpoint the locations of those committing these crimes in this digital age.
The ongoing tragedy of kidnappings and violent crimes across Nigeria highlights a dire need for accountability and action. As citizens mourn the loss of the Emir of Gobir, they also cry out for a government that will prioritize their safety and bring justice to those who commit these brutal acts. The nation watches and waits, hoping for a day when the tragic headlines will no longer be a common occurrence.
