In a significant move to strengthen its internal unity and reaffirm its commitment to the party’s national leadership, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, under the chairmanship of Sir (Chief) Tony C. Okocha, DSSRS, JP, convened an Enlarged Stakeholders' Meeting yesterday at the State Party Secretariat in Port Harcourt. The gathering, which drew participants from across the 319 wards in Rivers State's 23 Local Government Areas, was marked by unanimous expressions of support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration and his "Renewed Hope Agenda" aimed at revitalizing Nigeria's economy.
At the heart of the meeting was a decisive vote of confidence in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, recognizing his efforts to transform the nation. The stakeholders also extended this endorsement to Senator Godswill Akpabio, President of the Senate, and Chief (Barr) Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), lauding his developmental achievements in the capital.
In a show of solidarity, the APC stakeholders pledged their unwavering support for Sir (Chief) Tony C. Okocha's leadership of the party in Rivers State, aligning themselves with the directives of the National Working Committee (NWC), led by His Excellency Hon. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, PhD. Multiple motions were passed, including a boycott of the upcoming local government elections scheduled for October 5, 2024, citing an "inappropriate schedule" by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC). This motion, proposed by Hon. (Prof) John C. Imegi and seconded by Worgu Boms Esq, was enthusiastically endorsed by the stakeholders.
Additionally, Hon. Lasbry Amadi moved a motion to express confidence in President Tinubu, Senator Akpabio, and Minister Wike, a sentiment seconded by Elder Rt. Hon. Sampson Egop. The stakeholders reinforced their support with a standing ovation and a unified voice vote, further demonstrating their dedication to the party's leadership.
Elder (Hon) Chidi Wiyioka’s motion to affirm confidence in Hon. Victor Giadom, South-South Vice Chairman of the APC, and Sir (Chief) Tony C. Okocha as Chairman of the CTC of the APC in Rivers State was similarly supported. In his remarks, Sir (Chief) Tony C. Okocha expressed gratitude for the support shown by the party's stakeholders, emphasizing the importance of unity and reaffirming their collective commitment to advancing the APC’s mission in Rivers State.
In a direct message to his detractors, Okocha highlighted the dissolution of the former cabinet led by Emeka Beke by the party’s National Working Committee and confirmed that the APC in Rivers State would not participate in the local government elections scheduled for October 5, 2024. He reiterated that the APC is currently in court to challenge this election process, describing it as illegitimate.
Senator Wilson Asinobi Ake praised President Tinubu for appointing Chief (Barr) Nyesom Wike as Minister of the FCT, noting that any opposition to Wike is, by extension, opposition to Tinubu. Meanwhile, Hon. Ojukaye Flag-Amachree, former Chairman of the APC in Rivers State, urged Chief Emeka Beke to step aside and cease his attempts to claim the party’s leadership, given his previous lack of support for Tinubu.
The meeting concluded with a celebratory note as Sir (Chief) Tony C. Okocha praised the unprecedented turnout for the August 13, 2024, event in Rivers State, calling it a historic moment in Nigeria's political landscape. The gathering, marked by a massive turnout of over 50,000 supporters, underscored the party's robust grassroots support and underscored its commitment to President Tinubu's vision for Nigeria.
