As the nationwide march organized by the Tinubu Support Group (TSG) enters its sixth day, Khadijat Yusuf Suleiman, the National Convener of Door_2_Door_Youth and Women Initiative for Good Governance, has made a fervent appeal for patience and dialogue amid the ongoing unrest. Suleiman, who has been a prominent voice in advocating for good governance and social justice, urged Nigerians to grant President Tinubu's administration more time to address the nation's myriad challenges, noting that the President has been in office for just over a year.
During the ten-day march in Abuja organized by the TSG, Suleiman addressed the crowd, emphasizing the importance of peaceful engagement over chaos. She specifically called on the youth, particularly those from the North, to remain calm and engage in constructive dialogue rather than resorting to violent protests. Suleiman underscored that turmoil would not resolve the current issues and that only through peaceful negotiations could lasting solutions be achieved.
Suleiman reassured the public that President Tinubu's administration is actively working to address the difficulties faced by citizens. She highlighted several recent policy initiatives aimed at providing relief and improving the quality of life for Nigerians. Notably, the activation of the Student Loan Board has begun offering financial assistance to students, helping to alleviate the burden of educational expenses and enhance access to education. Another significant policy is the push for local government autonomy, which seeks to allocate funds directly to local communities rather than through state governors, thereby promoting greater transparency and effectiveness in resource management.
In addition to these measures, President Tinubu’s administration has made progress in easing food importation constraints by reopening borders for food imports and extending tax holidays to foodstuff importers. These steps are expected to help reduce food prices and improve the accessibility of essential goods.
Suleiman drew parallels with other countries where similar policies have yielded positive results. For example, in Kenya, the implementation of student loan schemes has significantly improved access to higher education, enabling many students who would otherwise be unable to afford it to pursue their studies. In Brazil, decentralizing government funding to local municipalities has enhanced public service delivery and increased community involvement in governance. Similarly, in India, relaxing import regulations and offering tax incentives has led to lower food prices and greater availability of essential goods.
Adding his voice to the appeal, Mr. Tosin Adeyanju, the Executive Secretary/CEO of the National Lottery Trust Funds and a prominent figure in the march, emphasized the need for unity and patience. He acknowledged the hardships many Nigerians are enduring but urged them to support the President’s reforms and contribute to a peaceful resolution of the ongoing issues. Mr. Adeyanju expressed confidence that the President’s policies would soon bring tangible improvements and encouraged the public to work together towards a more stable and prosperous future.
