.Umar Ibrahim Mohammed, Director General of Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) on Tuesday represented the Hon. Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr. Professor Joseph Terlumun Utsev, at a programme on Addressing the Impact of Climate Change on Farmer - Herder Clashes in Nigeria, facilitated by Hon. Terseer Ugbor, Deputy Chairman, House Committee on Environment, National Assembly, Abuja.
In his speech, the Hon. Minister highlighted the significance of addressing the impact of climate change on farmer-herder clashes in Nigeria.
He underscored the need for sustainable solutions that take into account the changing climate patterns and their effects on agriculture and pastoralism.
He also emphasized on the importance of collaboration between government agencies, stakeholders, and communities to find lasting solutions to the conflicts between farmers and herders.
He commended the efforts of Hon. Terseer Ugbor and his team for organizing the programme and urged all participants to work together towards finding sustainable solutions to the challenges posed by climate change.
Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev reiterated the commitment of the Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation to addressing the impact of climate change on farmer-herder clashes in Nigeria and called for continued collaboration and cooperation to achieve this goal.
The representative of the Secretary to the Federation, Prof. Babatunde Bolaji spoke about the effect of climate change to Nigeria.
Prof. Bolaji accentuated the significant impact of climate change on Nigeria, emphasizing that the country is particularly vulnerable to its effects.
He mentioned that rising temperatures, changing rainfall patterns, and extreme weather events such as floods and droughts are already having a detrimental impact on agriculture, water resources, and public health in Nigeria.
Prof. Bolaji also stressed the importance of taking urgent action to mitigate the effects of climate change and adapt to its impacts. He called for increased investment in renewable energy, sustainable agriculture practices, and climate-resilient infrastructure to help Nigeria build resilience to the changing climate.
Hinted on the need for global cooperation and solidarity in addressing the challenges created by climate change, stating that Nigeria is committed to playing its part in the global effort to combat this pressing issue.
A documentary tittled "Behind the Valley", a story of Climate Change and Farmer-Herder Conflicts in Benue State, Nigeria was premiered.
Hon. Terseer Ugbor will be making a presentation on the subject at the 79th United Nations General Assembly, in United States of America by September, 2024.
Overall, the programme was successful in bringing attention to these important issues and fostering collaboration among stakeholders to work towards climate change mitigation in Nigeria.
