Police IG Responds to Criticisms on Protest Management

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has recently addressed criticisms directed at the Inspector General of Police (IGP) by activist Deji Adeyanju and other detractors, who have alleged attempts by the IGP to undermine the Constitution. According to the Police, these claims are unfounded and misrepresent the institution’s role in maintaining public order.

In a press release dated July 28, 2024, the NPF clarified that the IGP’s request for details regarding the organizers and leaders of planned nationwide protests aligns with the constitutional provision for maintaining public order. The Police emphasized that their actions are not aimed at suppressing the right to peaceful assembly and expression, but at ensuring that such activities do not compromise national security.

"While every citizen has a constitutional right to freedom of association and expression," stated ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, "this right is balanced by the responsibility of ensuring that assemblies are conducted peacefully and do not pose a threat to national security."

The IGP's request for information, including protest schedules, locations, and routes, is described as a standard procedural measure. This approach aims to facilitate effective communication, safeguard participants, and prevent potential unlawful activities. The NPF also highlighted that such measures are consistent with Section 45 (1) of the 1999 Constitution, which allows for restrictions in the interest of public safety and order.

The press release further underscored the importance of knowing the identities of those organizing protests. The Police warned against the dangers of allowing unidentified groups to operate, referencing the violent incidents during the 2020 EndSARS protests. The statement suggested that involvement of organized labor and recognized bodies could contribute to a more structured and safer protest environment.

The NPF called on Adeyanju and other critics to avoid misleading the public and to collaborate in upholding national security and well-being.

"The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to protecting the rights and freedoms of all citizens while ensuring public safety and order," Adejobi concluded.
