In a significant move to combat illegal mining, the Federal Government yesterday arraigned eight Chinese nationals and one Nigerian for illicit mining activities in the Lokpaukwu community, Umuchieze, Umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia State. This development underscores the government's commitment to sanitizing the mining sector.
The suspects were apprehended by the Mining Marshals, an elite security unit derived from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). Tasked with eliminating illegal mining operators, this special force operates under the code name "Operation Hayakin Kogo" and was established by the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake. The initiative forms a crucial part of his seven-point agenda aimed at reforming the mining sector.
The suspects, SHEN YONGCHAN, MO BAIXIAN, XIAO BIN, HUANG XU FA, MA BINGLI, YANG JIAN, LI PEIYIN, QUE WENYONG, HIYK EDWARD DESMOND, and WANDA COMPANY LIMITED, were brought before Justice J.K. Omotosho at the Federal High Court in Abuja. The prosecution presented a three-count charge, which includes mining without lawful authority and obstructing lawful mining operations.
Following the hearing, the defendants were remanded at Kuje Correctional Centre, pending the continuation of the trial. This case is a testament to the dedication of the 2,570-strong Mining Marshals, led by ACC John Onoja, who are committed to eradicating criminal syndicates in mining areas nationwide.
Dr. Alake emphasized the importance of enhancing the capabilities of the Mining Marshals through technological advancements and additional resources. His goal is to ensure that Nigeria fully benefits from its abundant mineral resources, fostering economic growth and development.
