Lagos, Nigeria— The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has issued a detailed clarification regarding the recent fire incident at a tank farm in Marine Beach, Apapa, Lagos. Initial reports mistakenly identified the site of the fire as an NNPC Retail Ltd. facility. However, NNPC Ltd. confirmed that the fire occurred at a depot operated by HOGL Energy Ltd. (Honeywell Depot).
The fire, which ignited due to a petroleum products spillage within the depot's perimeter, caused significant concern among local residents and businesses. Emergency responders swiftly contained and extinguished the blaze, preventing further escalation.
NNPC Ltd. emphasized that its facilities were not affected and that operations at its depots continued without interruption. The company assured the public that there would be no adverse effects on the supply and distribution of petroleum products across the country. "We want to reassure Nigerians that the incident at Honeywell Depot will not impact our ability to supply and distribute petroleum products efficiently," stated Olufemi Soneye, Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd.
Local authorities, along with HOGL Energy Ltd., have commenced an investigation to ascertain the cause of the spillage and implement measures to prevent future occurrences. Meanwhile, safety protocols have been reviewed and reinforced to ensure the protection of assets and personnel in the area.
NNPC Ltd. highlighted the swift response and collaboration between various emergency services, including the Lagos State Fire Service, the Federal Fire Service, and other safety agencies. Their coordinated efforts were instrumental in bringing the situation under control promptly.
