DSS Operatives Storm Emir of Kano’s Palace Amid Deposition Speculation

By Mohammed Bello Doka

Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) stormed the palace of the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, on Thursday, fueling speculation of his imminent deposition.

This move followed the passage of the Kano State Emirates Council Amendment Law (repeal bill), 2024, by the state assembly earlier that morning.

Our correspondent, present at the palace around 11am, observed DSS operatives stationed at the site. Despite the Emir being away on a private visit to the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, in Ogun State, security forces were positioned at the palace entrance in anticipation of potential developments.

The new law nullifies all positions created under the previous legislation. If Governor Abba Kabiru Yusuf assents to it, the law will take effect, raising concerns that the Emir might be removed from his position. The bill mandates the governor to take necessary actions to restore the Kano emirate to its former status prior to the repealed law.
