In a vehement condemnation, Egypt has called on the United Nations Security Council to take immediate action following what it described as the deliberate targeting of shelters for displaced persons by Israeli forces in Rafah, Palestine. The Egyptian government’s statement emphasized the urgent need for international intervention to prevent further civilian casualties and to restore peace in the region.
According to reports, the latest escalation has resulted in significant casualties among Palestinian civilians, including women and children who were seeking refuge in the shelters. The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement describing the attack as a “blatant violation of international law and human rights,” calling it an unacceptable act of aggression.
Highlighting the severity of the situation, Egypt stressed the necessity for Israel to comply with its legal obligations and to respect the directives issued by the International Court of Justice, which mandate an immediate cessation of military operations in Rafah. “Israel must adhere to its responsibilities under international law to protect civilians and ensure their safety,” the statement read.
Reiterating its urgent appeal, Egypt pressed the Security Council to secure an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and to bring a halt to the ongoing military activities in Rafah. Egyptian officials have been actively engaging with international counterparts, urging them to recognize the gravity of the crisis and to take decisive action. Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry has been in constant communication with various UN representatives and key international stakeholders to rally support for a swift resolution.
The Egyptian government underscored the critical role of the international community in fulfilling its legal and humanitarian responsibilities to protect Palestinian civilians and prevent further loss of life. “The international community cannot remain silent in the face of such atrocities. There is a legal and moral duty to act immediately,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs declared.
In addition to calling for an immediate ceasefire, Egypt has also urged for the establishment of humanitarian corridors to allow the safe passage of aid and medical supplies to the affected areas. The humanitarian situation in Gaza has been described as dire, with hospitals overwhelmed by the influx of injured civilians and a severe shortage of medical supplies.
The Rafah crossing, which serves as a critical lifeline between Gaza and Egypt, has seen intermittent openings to allow the passage of aid convoys, but security concerns have often hindered consistent access. Egypt has expressed its willingness to facilitate humanitarian efforts, provided that there are guarantees of safety and coordination with international aid organizations.
This latest appeal by Egypt adds to the growing international calls for a de-escalation of the conflict and the protection of civilian lives. Numerous countries and international bodies have voiced their concern over the humanitarian impact of the hostilities and have called for renewed peace talks.
As the situation in Rafah and broader Gaza remains volatile, the world watches closely, hoping for a breakthrough that will lead to lasting peace and stability in the region. The urgency of Egypt's call to the Security Council reflects the desperate need for an immediate and effective response to avert further tragedies and to uphold international humanitarian laws.
