Tensions mount within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the camps of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Minister Nyesom Wike vie for control of the party's National Working Committee (NWC) ahead of the upcoming National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on April 18.
Sources reveal a brewing conflict stemming from Wike's alleged intention to support the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 presidential election, while Atiku eyes the PDP's presidential ticket.
With the North-central set to propose a candidate for the party's National Chairman position at the NEC meeting, contenders such as Senator Gabriel Suswam and Humphrey Abba, both from Benue State, remain cautious not to openly align with either camp to avoid jeopardizing their chances.
Amid concerns that Wike's potential control of the party structure could weaken the PDP, speculations arise about his strategy to facilitate the APC's victory in 2027, as observed in his previous actions during the 2023 general election.
Critics fear Wike's covert allegiance to the APC could lead to further fragmentation within the PDP and ultimately benefit the ruling party's electoral prospects in the future.
