Nigeria’s electricity grid has once again suffered a collapse, plunging citizens into darkness, according to a report by Daily Trust.
The grid failure occurred at approximately 2:42 am on Monday, with power generation plummeting to a mere 64.70 megawatts. Shockingly, only one generation company, Ibom Power, remained operational during this period, as revealed by data from the Independent System Operator (ISO), a division of the Transmission Company of Nigeria.
This recent collapse marks the sixth such incident in 2024 alone, highlighting the persistent challenges facing Nigeria’s power sector. As of 8 am on Monday, the latest data from the ISO indicated that the grid was only able to produce 266.50 megawatts of electricity, sourced from Okpai, Geregu, and Ibom power plants.
Jos DisCo, one of the affected distribution companies, confirmed the outage in a statement, attributing it to the loss of power supply from the national grid. Dr. Friday Adakole Elijah, the company’s head of Corporate Affairs, expressed optimism for a swift resolution, hoping for the restoration of normal power supply to their customers.
As Nigerians grapple with yet another power crisis, questions arise about the resilience and sustainability of the country's electricity infrastructure.
