In a poignant display of solidarity and commitment, Rivers State Governor, Sir Sim Fubara, extended his heartfelt condolences to the Nigerian Air Force and Officers of the 115 Special Operations Group following the passing of Sergeant D.F. Ekemughan in active service. The governor, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Tammy Danagogo, presented a cheque of N20 million to Sergeant Ekemughan's widow, Mrs. Bobra Ekemughan, as a gesture of support and recognition of her husband's sacrifice.
Expressing his unwavering commitment to the security agencies in the state, Governor Fubara emphasized that while no amount of compensation can equate to the loss of a human life, the endowment aimed to reassure the bereaved family that their loved one's service was not in vain. Addressing Mrs. Ekemughan directly, the Governor encouraged her to remain steadfast in her faith and to uphold the responsibility of raising her children to become exemplary citizens of Nigeria.
Meanwhile, Governor Fubara affirmed the importance of skill acquisition in fostering self-sustainability and economic empowerment. He officially declared open a 3-Day Skill Acquisition training program for military veterans in the South-South Geo-political zone, organized by the Defence Headquarters, Veteran Affairs Division. Themed 'Empowering Military Veterans through Skills Acquisition for Capacity Building and Sustainability,' the program aims to equip veterans with practical skills for self-reliance.
Acknowledging the significance of supporting initiatives that positively impact veterans, Governor Fubara assured the government's commitment to backing endeavors that promote tangible results. The event was attended by high-ranking military officials, including the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. C. G. Musa, represented by the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 6 Division, Maj. Gen. Jamil Abdussalam, and the Director of Veteran Affairs, Army Headquarters, Maj. Gen. D. I. Salu.
Over the course of the training, veterans will receive instruction in various fields such as poultry and fish farming, snail farming, animal husbandry, financial literacy, and record-keeping, empowering them to pursue diverse avenues of self-sustenance. The initiative marks a significant step towards honoring the service and sacrifice of Nigeria's military personnel, ensuring their welfare and prosperity beyond their years of active duty.
