In a bold move set to redefine the geopolitical landscape of South-West Nigeria, a proposal for the creation of three new states has emerged in the hallowed halls of the House of Representatives. Sponsored by Oluwole Oke, the esteemed lawmaker representing Obokun/Oriade Federal Constituency, Osun State, this ambitious initiative aims to address long-standing governance challenges and foster accelerated development across the region.
Titled "A Bill for an Act to Modify the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as Revised)," the proposed legislation seeks to amend the First Schedule, Part I of the Constitution. Through this transformative measure, the envisioned states—Oke-Ogun, Ijebu, and Ife-Ijesa—are poised to emerge as bastions of progress and prosperity.
Under the proposed framework, Oke-Ogun State would span a vast expanse, comprising 12 local government areas. With Iseyin earmarked as its administrative capital, the state would encompass diverse communities such as Olorunsogo, Irepo, Ogbomosho North, Ogbomosho South, Saki-East, Saki-West, Atisbo, Itesiwaju, Iwajowa, Kajola, and Iseyin. This strategic delineation aims to optimize resource allocation and promote grassroots participation in governance.
Similarly, Ijebu State is poised to emerge as a dynamic hub of economic activity and cultural heritage. With Ijebu Ode designated as its capital, the state would comprise eight local government areas, including Ijebu East, Ijebu North-East, Ijebu Ode, Ikenne, Odogbolu, Ogun Waterside, Remo North, and Sagamu. This configuration is tailored to harness the entrepreneurial spirit and historical legacy of the Ijebu people, fostering sustainable growth and socio-economic empowerment.
Meanwhile, Ife-Ijesa State is envisioned as a beacon of unity and progress, embracing the rich cultural tapestry of its constituent communities. With its capital city yet to be determined, the state would encompass 11 local government areas, including Atakunmosa East, Atakunmosa West, Boluwaduro, Ife Central, Ife East, Ife North, Ife South, Ilesa East, Ilesa West, Oboku, and Oriade. By leveraging the collective strengths of its diverse populace, Ife-Ijesa State aims to pioneer inclusive governance models and foster holistic development initiatives.
In a letter dispatched to the Clerk of the House on February 6, 2024, Oluwole Oke expressed his unwavering commitment to advancing the bill for legislative consideration. "I wish to forward the abovementioned bill to your office for further necessary legislative action to enable me to move same in our great Green Chamber, sir," he articulated, underscoring the urgency of the proposed reforms.
