Nigerian Army Senior Officer Appointed as Deputy Force Commander in MINURSO Western

In a historic moment for Nigeria and the African continent, Brigadier General Gabriel Olufemi Esho shattered barriers as he was appointed Deputy Force Commander of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO). This landmark appointment not only signifies personal achievement for Brigadier General Esho but also marks a significant milestone for Nigeria, as he becomes the first Nigerian to hold such a position within MINURSO. 

Brigadier General Esho, a native of Ondo State in western Nigeria, demonstrated determination and commitment from a young age, leading him to pursue a military career. Graduating from the prestigious Nigerian Defense Academy with honors in Mathematics and a master's degree in Strategic Studies, his exceptional leadership qualities quickly earned recognition. Throughout his career, he showcased fierceness, resilience, and a profound grasp of strategic military operations, making him a natural choice for various peacekeeping missions across Africa.

MINURSO, established by the UN Security Council in 1991, oversees the referendum on self-determination for the people of Western Sahara. Brigadier General Esho's appointment as Deputy Force Commander not only acknowledges his exceptional military skills but also highlights the UN's commitment to diversifying its peacekeeping forces. His vision for MINURSO emphasizes engagement with the Sahrawi people, fostering dialogue, and promoting trust within communities.
