As Police Arrest 5, Recover Diverted Goods
The Nigeria Police Force, under the leadership of ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, reiterates its unwavering commitment to combatting illegal activities within Nigeria's ports and economic hubs, emphasizing its pivotal role in supporting the government's economic recovery agenda.
In a recent operation led by the Eastern Port Police Command, five suspects were apprehended in connection with the diversion of bags of wheat belonging to the United Nations World Food Programme (UNWFP). The arrest culminated in the recovery of approximately 1,238 bags of wheat in Port-Harcourt on February 6, 2024.
The intercepted wheat, initially destined for an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Kano State, was fraudulently diverted by the apprehended drivers and their associates. The swift action of Nigeria Police operatives stationed at the Eastern Port led to the arrest of the suspects: Umar Hashim, Edidiong Umoh, Udah Stanley, Abubakar Jariri, and Yunusa Babangida.
Alongside the arrests, law enforcement officials successfully recovered the stolen wheat, a testament to the force's dedication to upholding the rule of law and protecting public interests. The recovered bags have been promptly returned to the World Food Programme, with ongoing efforts to locate the remaining 602 bags and apprehend additional suspects involved in the criminal enterprise.
Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, reaffirms the Nigeria Police's resolve to vigorously pursue individuals engaged in economic sabotage and exploitation of vulnerable segments of society. He has instructed that all necessary legal actions be taken against the apprehended suspects following thorough investigations, ensuring accountability and justice prevail.
