According to Okediji's account on his Facebook page, he was allegedly extorted and robbed of over $500 by NIS personnel during a routine inspection at the Seme border upon his arrival in Nigeria from Ghana. The professor claimed that he was stopped for a search, and the officials insisted on a $40 settlement, citing an expired Nigerian passport as the reason.
