According to police spokesperson, Bright Edafe, the incident unfolded when a woman named Regina Ogana and her husband were kidnapped on August 2 in the community. The husband is an elder brother of the accused.
Sadly, Mrs. Ogana was tragically killed by the kidnappers, while the other family members were eventually released after a ransom of N1.3 million was paid. At that point, the police commenced an investigation into the murder of Mrs. Ogana, only for her husband to inform them about the "suspicious call" he received from the alleged suspect, claiming to be kidnapped and demanding N500,000 as ransom.
Upon receiving this information, Commissioner of Police Wale Abass ordered the investigation into the matter. The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Oreropke Police Headquarters, Paul Oboware, led a team to conduct the operation, resulting in the arrest of Ezekiel Eseoghene Obeje. Notably, Obeje was apprehended at the exact location where the sum of N1.3 million had recently been paid for the release of his elder brother.
Further investigation has revealed that Eseoghene, a member of the Eiye confraternity, had staged his own kidnapping and is suspected to have masterminded the abduction of his brother and other family members, leading to the unfortunate demise of Mrs. Ogana.
The police are currently conducting a thorough investigation into the case. Abduction for ransom remains a prevalent crime in many Nigerian cities, posing significant challenges to law enforcement authorities.
